Over the years, Kanta aunty has shared with me the delicious pickles she made. She is older now, more than 90 years. Due to the Covid pandemic, she has been feeling isolated and a bit low.
Recently, I wanted to try out a mango pickle recipe. As I didn’t want to bother her, I checked the procedure online and collected all the ingredients. The other day, while talking to aunty, I mentioned my intention of making the pickle. This upset her a bit as she is becoming forgetful and unable to do much anymore.
After my conversation with her, I realised how this new situation was impacting our elders. Next day, I made her favourite daal wali roti (lentil stuffed flatbread), took all the ingredients for the pickle to her and requested her to teach me how to make it. Instantly there was a smile on her face. She didn’t allow me to do anything except listen to and watch her. I had already seen the recipe online but learning from her, and seeing the smile on her face felt nice.
After spending some time with her, I left, feeling glad that she was filled with the satisfaction of being useful.
Takeaway
Learning from and working together with elders brings joy.
