This happened when I was in college. We were suffering from a financial crunch due to the death of my father. I had started working at a night job during my first year of college to help out with the family finances. One morning, when I was returning from my night job, I lost control of my bike and rammed it into a Mercedes Benz car in front of me due to tiredness and lack of sleep. The brake lights shattered and the rear trunk was dented horribly.
I was shocked seeing the damage and was sweating profusely with fear. The owner of the car was justifiably livid when he saw the condition of his car. He looked at me with angry eyes, but then his gaze changed. He looked at my tired eyes and saw how exhausted I looked. Unexpectedly, instead of asking me for compensation or threatening me with a legal action or bashing me up, he asked me what I did. Nervously, I replied that I was a first-year college student, worked night shifts and was on my home from work.
He looked at his car, then at me again and asked if I had any idea how much it would cost him to repair the damage. He added that he would have to bear all the cost since that was not covered by insurance. I couldn’t speak up and remained speechless.
Then, out of the blue, he told me to leave and that he would take care of everything. He warned me to be more careful and reminded me that it was dangerous to drive when one was sleepy and tired. I thanked him profusely and left.
Even now I wonder why he let me off like that. Probably he could relate to and empathize with my hardship and struggle due to circumstances of his own. Whatever it was, till date, I remember his kindness, and it motivates me to be kind too.
Be kind to others, you never know what battles they are fighting.
