When I first started out as a volunteer Palliative Caregiver 6 years ago, little did I know then that we would all grow as a strong team and survive. Reading my posts on FB, much support has come our way, and we have attracted like-minded donors and new recruits.
This year two talented artist stepped in and helped our patients paint diyas for Diwali. While this activity was going on our youngest contributors from a nearby international school( aged 5-8) had also joined in. They brought handmade decorations meticulously made by them to deck our halls. Our volunteers too decorated the place, making it look like a loving Indian home.
What I remember the most of that afternoon is the blissful silence that enveloped the hospice. The patients were at ease, smiling as they seemed to have forgotten their pain for a while. Everyone was busy and had a purpose. The nurses could take a breather. Such an incredible team and an even more beautiful world.
Service with the right intent will sustain. It is contagious and fulfilling.
