My mother and I recently went out for a meal together to a lovely South Indian restaurant. It was a busy place, and the staff was on their toes bustling about, working in a really admirable, efficient way, taking and filling orders at top speed.
After I was done eating, I looked down at my plate and saw bits and pieces of crumbs and leftovers on the banana leaf that my meal was served on. It was not a pretty sight! My thoughts went out to the people who were going to clean this mess for hundreds like me. How would I have felt in their shoes? Could I do anything that would make life easier for the restaurant staff at that moment? I’m not sure how much it helped, but I rolled up the banana leaf for easy disposal and cleaned my side of the table as best as I could. I now try and do this whenever possible as a silent way to show gratitude and respect for the work that the restaurant staff do.
We all deserve equal support, love and dignity no matter who we are and what we do.
