I got a call from the person who is in charge of my institute at Abohar Punjab. It was to let me know that there is a couple with two small kids who have been duped and now don’t have money for food or tickets. It so happened that a contractor from Fazilka Punjab somehow got in touch with this family, who hailed from Maharashtra and had promised them a job in Fazilka. He also extracted some money from them and asked them to travel to Punjab.
The family trusted him and reached Fazilka on 16th Dec. They called him from the station, but he didn’t reply. They waited for him at the station in the bitter cold for three days. Since they are from Maharashtra, they were not clad well for the harsh winter. They just had Rs 1000 with them, which didn’t last long. Someone suggested they travel to Abohar and catch a train back. They reached Abohar but did not have the money to go back to their village. This is where, by chance, they met my team. We decided to buy their tickets for their return journey to their village. They were served warm food, given blankets, and some food for the trip. They happily boarded the night train on 19th Dec to return home.
I am sure they will remember Abohar, Punjab, as the city of helpful people. And to make sure this incident doesn’t repeat, we reported the incident to media.
Keeping one’s word is a mark of good character.
