Last July, I was allowed to commit to a long term act of kindness. In the past, I have shied away from making such long-term commitments. I had however regularly participated in giving to good causes, always wondering if it actually made any difference.
This time I remembered the starfish story narrated by my mentor in a discourse.
There is an orphanage in Bangalore, housing young kids, and I was allowed to fund the education and boarding for two young girls. Other people foster kids in the orphanage as well. I record messages to them in English, and they reply to me in Kannada. The exciting thing is, this giving is making me feel good. When I hear their voices or receive pictures of their certificates and progress, I feel so privileged to be part of their journey.
Recently due to torrential rains in Bangalore, their rooms flooded and their belongings were all washed away, and yet, there were no complaints, no despair. The rest of the community came together to replenish books, clothes and other belongings and settled the children in another temporary house. These little children with their hope, courage and hard work continue to inspire me. It is I who am the starfish in this scenario, for I feel their presence in my life has enriched it and made the difference. 🙏
Giving is a privilege given to the lucky ones.
