We have been moving houses because of my husband’s job. I used to habitually give away a few of my possessions before each posting. Our home theatre system has been with us for a decade. Despite the clean up drive every three years or so, this home theatre has stuck with us. Last year, after we landed in Mumbai, the home theatre didn’t have a dedicated place in our home and ended up on top of my chest of drawer.
I wanted to declutter my living room by doing away with the console. A thought compelled me to detach myself from all materialistic things. I told my husband that I wanted to give away the home theatre system to our part-time helper, who is a bright and chirpy person. He wasn’t surprised at this as he knows about the iPad we gifted our helper in Singapore for being with us throughout our stay there.
We called the helper to our bedroom and played a song on the system and told her that it belonged to her. She was taken aback at first, but then broke to a huge smile and danced jovially. The sheer joy and happiness we witnessed were priceless.
Declutter your life, donate your possessions for a cause or to a person – their happiness brings us immense happiness as well.
