There are a few squirrels that live on the tree adjoining my house, and in the empty room on my terrace. I always assumed that squirrels loved peanuts and proceeded to feed them the same. Every day, I would keep some peanuts for them to eat. My cat, Coco, was the manager 🙂 She would sit and watch the squirrels eat.
One day when I wasn’t at home, my helper gave the squirrels cooked rice as we were out of peanuts. Little did we realize that they loved rice as well. Another day, as there was no leftover rice, my helper gave them some corn flakes, and I kept some leftover pasta to check if they liked it. To my delight, along with the squirrels, a few beautiful green parrots, a few crows, an Asian koel and a kite came to eat the corn flakes and the pasta. I don’t know if it is ok for them to eat all this, but the birds have adapted themselves to eating what they find. One of my spiritual guides jokingly remarked that he didn’t know of any parrot following a diet.
Now we have a menu that we offer to the birds and the squirrels, and they are very selective. The crows and the koel like pasta, the parrots like cornflakes, the kite likes the rice. 🙂 And contrary to my belief, the cute squirrels eat anything and everything. My baby Coco keeps an eye on everyone while they eat, like a perfect hostess.
Nature adapts to situations! We have to as well.
