As a child, I always liked doing a kind deed just so that God would be happy and reward me. One day my cousin told me that if I kept doing good deeds hoping for a reward from God, I was selfish. As a child, I even felt quite guilty that I was doing kind deeds only because I wanted God to reward me.
I realized that a lot of children go through this dilemma. However, I tell my children that if they think that they are doing a kind deed to get God’s attention and a reward from him, so be it. But remember to be kind because He may not reward this kind deed or your 100th kind deed. But you are doing a kind deed and helping someone. Can you imagine not helping someone out just because you are selfish? So continue to be kind, help out, be empathetic. You may or may not be rewarded today. Eventually, you will, and you will know of those rewards only when you are older.
