A family of construction workers lived near our house, and their kids would come to our place twice a day to take some ice cubes, which was their only respite from the scorching heat. The little girl would call out after ringing the bell “Aunty baaraf dedo”(Aunty Please give me ice) and I would lovingly call her Burfeli. Yesterday she came all dressed up, and as I looked at her and complimented for looking so lovely, she said, “ Hum jaa rahe hain gaon ab nahi aaenge” (they were going to their village and would not be returning). She had tears in her eyes when she said so, and I realised that even my eyes were wet. Some connections don’t have names, they are just a part of being human.
