I have seen men and women carrying huge empty bags on their shoulders at odd hours collecting plastic waste, polybags, plastic bottles, etc. from the roads – it had always pained me. The callousness with which people litter astounds me and the fact that cleaning up after such people is being carried out by garbage pickers for a pittance, with total disregard to their personal hygiene or safety.
While I refrain from using plastic, but there’s no escaping the packaging that comes with groceries, snacks, milk pouches and several items of daily use. So instead of discarding them as trash, I diligently collect them, however small.
I have found a spot where the waste is gathered before its segregated. The garbage pickers are usually there, and I handle all the bags that I had collected and as a gesture of gratitude also give them some money.
