I was blessed with a daughter at a time where her father and I could fulfil her every want. It worried me that my daughter will never learn to respect the working class and be kind to less privileged people.
One day my gardener came to work for us on a hot sultry day, and I was busy in the kitchen. I heard my daughter ask the gardener if he wanted some water. She then came inside and asked me if I could put some water in a glass for him. She felt compassion for him as she thought he worked outside on hot summer days and would be thirsty.
I was overjoyed and hugged her tight. She questioned my surprise and added that she had seen me do this with everyone, even a passerby who wasn’t doing anything for us. It’s basic humanity.
I realised that day that we teach straightforward human emotions by example.
