The world is in the midst of a pandemic- people are coming forward to help each other, and every day our mettle is being tested. While everyone is trying to do their best, some people are setting the highest bars and inspiring others. Bharathi is one such person. She is a neighbour who has been tirelessly organising food, masks, clothes, shoes and other essential collection drives for the migrant worker colonies and the ones travelling back to their hometowns. Every single week there is at least one ( on an average 2) such drives where the community comes together and wholeheartedly participates by doing their bit. One might think- that’s good, but that’s what the whole country is doing. What makes Bharathi special? It is the fact that she suffers from a severe allergy, the kind that breaks out on her hands and face and is very painful and itchy (it is not contagious). While most women would refuse to step out of their homes under such ailment, she is out there dealing with cartons and old clothes and footwear and whatnot, making sure the collection and handover run smoothly- doing much more than most of us. She doesn’t let go of any opportunity to serve the less fortunate, often at the cost of her health. So for me, if humanity and service have a face, it would be Bharathi’s ? . It is an honour and a privilege to know her. May she be blessed with health and happiness. ?
