This happened 2-3 months ago.
When I got home at noon, my mother told me a puppy had been howling since morning behind our home. I went there and saw him lying under a loading rickshaw, unmoving. I tried to give him some food, but he wouldn’t move at all. We guessed that a vehicle must’ve hit him.
I looked up the number of a local animal welfare organization. The lady told me a proper vet wasn’t available, and so a compounder would come in 30 minutes to give him an injection, and I should get him to a vet the next day.
My friend got the puppy out of the rickshaw, and he was in our care now. My father applied balm on his leg, and we fed him milk and medicines. He was wailing continuously but stopped after some time. We thought he might be getting better and were happy.
At night, we were supposed to give him meds again. My friend came at 9, and we both walked up to the puppy, who was on my porch. He was quiet – really quiet. I feared the worst for a moment but then saw that he was breathing.
As soon as we both touched him, he stretched his mouth wide along with his whole body. My friend, who had owned pets before, said that he was going to die; I didn’t believe him. But he was right.
Trust me, it happened as soon as we touched him. I like to think that he waited to say the last goodbye.
I, my friend, and our neighbour buried him early the next day.
