Last year I spent considerable time working with a disaster response team in Odisha after the two successive cyclones – Fani in May and Bulbul in November. As an organization, we helped more 6000 people with food, construction of houses, educational materials, hygiene kits, blankets, etc.
The work was continuous without any breaks over weekends. But I felt no lack of energy in me. I have been practicing random acts of kindness almost every day. So that, I think, prepared me for these planned acts of kindness. Every time we finished our relief distribution, I felt such a wave of happiness to see the smiling faces of the women and children. Even if it is my profession, one that I have been doing it for the last twenty years, this time it was different because I felt the closeness to the people who were the beneficiaries of my work, thus a tremendous satisfaction. It felt that I am helping myself and that I am impacting society positively.
