Mumbai isn’t a city which experiences extreme winter conditions. However, that day was different. It was cold out there; cold enough for me to get uncomfortable without warm clothes. As I returned home at 11 pm and parked my bike, I had a little chat with the security guard of our apartment complex.
He said to me, “Aaj bahut thand hai. ” (It’s very cold today). To which I replied, “Haan, achanak se, nai? Aapke paas kambal wagera hai na?” (Yes, all of a sudden it’s cold. Do you have enough blankets to keep you comfortable at night?).
“Kambal lena padega,” he said. (I have to buy one) I said my goodbyes and good night to him and rushed home. I asked my mother if we had extra blankets. We didn’t. I remembered a quote by OmSwami -‘Treat others as you would treat yourself, if not better.’So, my mother and I took out the only fresh new blanket we had and gave it to him. We thought, at least we are in the comfort of our home. Besides, we have tons of bedsheets to keep us warm. Whereas, he’ll be out under the moon keeping an eye on the gate. He deserves better.
I can’t express how wonderful and grateful I feel that God gave me enough so that I can be his medium to give back.
Happiness is in giving. Giving love, care, and compassion.
