I am a government employee and work for the railways. I meet people from all walks of life daily. One day, while checking a train at a station, I found a small boy walking about alone in the crowd. Since he was looking around, I thought that possibly he was separated from his parents. I asked him his name and his parents whereabouts. He told me his name and said that his parents were nearby. In the one hour that I was with him, nobody came searching for that boy. I wondered whether he has been abducted and asked him the name of his village again. The boy remained silent and was not forthcoming at all.
I took him to the child helpline office and informed them about the situation. They assured me that they would look into this matter and revert. I returned to my office but was still uneasy about leaving the little boy alone there. Unable to quell my uneasiness, I went back to the child helpline office. On seeing me, the boy ran towards me and held me tightly saying that he wanted to go back to his mummy. My eyes welling over with tears, I hugged him lovingly and reassured him that he was safe and need not worry. I promised him that he would be returned to his parents and till then he had to remain with the authorities.
The story emerged that the boy had run away from home to go to his grandmother’s place, but had boarded the wrong train, unfortunately. Since the last three days, he had been roaming around. His parents were located and informed about their son in a couple of days. After completing all the legal procedures, he was handed over to his parents.
