I stayed in rental accommodation for ten years before shifting to our own home five years ago. The place that I left had wonderful people providing all kind of services and help. Every Diwali was made bigger and sweeter by sharing gifts and sweets with everyone who provided us with services, one way or the other.
There was this lady next to my place who ironed clothes for us, whom everyone called aunty. The day we left, she had a heavy heart. I, however, didn’t let that relationship end there. I have ensured that for the last five years, I pay her a visit on Diwali with sweets and a saree. The warm hug, smile and the blessings are all that I crave for, which is much bigger than any other gift. That twinkle in her eyes says it all. I don’t want to break this custom because there is nothing that fills your heart more than kindness and bringing a smile when someone is least expecting it.
Be the person that makes others feel included.
