Last July, I became friends with a girl who was already living in a flat into which I had recently moved. Very soon, we were sharing meals, talking about our childhood, our families, our interests and passions. We became really close friends in just a few days that we began to wish we had met a little early in life.
However, all good things must come to an end. She was to leave the flat in a month’s time and return to her home state, to start a fresh life with another career. I drew a sketch of the Buddha, added an inspiring quote, and presented it to her as a parting gift.
Today, after about a year, I got a message from her, saying that she had kept that sketch on her study table and she woke up to it every day. On the bad days it gave her hope and on good ones, she was reminded of me. She thanked me for inspiring her from miles away.
This message filled me up with gratitude and appreciation. The memory of the quote I had added to the Buddha sketch reminded me of the challenges I am facing in my meditation practice. As Buddha said, “No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again”.
Takeaway
We can reach out and touch lives even at a distance.
