I have been working with an NGO in Uttarakhand on natural resource conservation. I am aware that the mortality rate for saplings left uncared for is as high as 80 to 90%. So we came up with an idea to distribute over 200 fruit saplings like kiwi, apricot, peach, etc. to the villagers with the condition that the responsibility for survival would be theirs and so also the fruits.
I kept a regular follow up with my NGO friend on the status of plants for almost two years. Then due to other activities, I lost track. Imagine my surprise when he called up a few days ago with photographs to show the first crop of kiwi fruits dancing and shouted, “Bhaisaab our trees have begun to bear fruits.”
The joy of seeing our efforts give such sweet results is indescribable!
