This Thursday, I woke up very lethargic. I was quite upset. As I had my tea, I picked up Swamiji’s book, The Book of Kindness, and began turning the pages to divert my mind.
A few minutes later, I heard the familiar voice of an elderly lady who visits often, and whenever she does, my mother offers her food and clothes. I immediately remembered that the previous week she had asked me for any old cotton salwar which she could wear along with her sari to get some comfort in the winter chill. Unfortunately, I had stopped wearing salwars and had given away most of them. I did think that I would buy one for her, but I knew that a mere salwar wouldn’t help to keep her warm.
I got some wheat flour and money to give her, and turned towards my wardrobe, pulled out a pair of thermals, and rushed to give it to her. She was ecstatic, seeing the warm garment and rushed to a corner near our car, calling out to me that she was going to wear it immediately. I closed the gates, and before I could turn towards her to take her inside, she had already worn it. Throughout these few minutes, she kept blessing my family and me. While leaving, she happily said, “Man ki muraad puri hogayi, beta” (my heart’s desire is fulfilled, child). I found me smiling broadly, for the first time in four days, forgetting all my stresses. It was like my wish was fulfilled too.
