I haven’t talked to my parents for 15 years. Too many painful things had happened, and I wasn’t able to forgive.
Then I started meditation. And one day I picked up the phone and called my parents. I could hear my mother’s voice shaking. “You will always be my child,” she said. She passed the phone to my father. “I am happy you are calling,” he said.
I am 46 now. We have talked a lot since then, and I understand them much better now. Their challenges as an immigrant couple from a poor country who were suddenly thrown into a completely different society, and then suddenly there is this little girl, me.
I blamed them for so many things they weren’t able to handle themselves. Now with the compassion of an adult and the love of the daughter I still am, I can forgive.
All that counts now is that we are a family again.
