Life is interesting because every question it poses comes with two answers. We all know that the correct answer is: do the right thing. If only the answers presented were so simple.
I am going to share something that happened to me many years ago, and although I did the right thing, I did not get rewarded. However, in my heart, as I was able to sleep well at night.
I was at an NCC camp, and we were sharing the dorm room with another group from a different city. There was a continuous power struggle that went on between the two team leaders about almost everything.
Then one day, one of the fellow roommates from another group fell sick and threw up on the floor. Her entire group was in training and could not help her out. Our team leader, on the other hand, was in the room and furiously lashed out at the girl and asked her to clean up. We all felt terrible because the girl had a high fever and could not move. Finally, I could not take this anymore and ended up cleaning the vomit. My team leader was angry with me for helping as I did not follow her orders (which we are expected to).
When we got back to school, the entire episode was narrated to our commanding officer. She was upset me with me for disobeying the leader and asked me to run around the campus for two rounds. My team leader was also asked to do the same for showing a lack of humanity.
The gesture helped both the groups get along for the rest of the week, except for our team leader.
We all face such dilemmas all the time, and at such times we should always ask ourselves if our choice ensures a win for humanity.
Take the road that helps you sleep at night.
