I am responsible for a new employee who gives me a lot of difficulties. He would not do the tasks that I assign, and even after all the training we gave him, would not perform.
I had tried giving him many assignments to see if he would attach an improved work ethic to his high competence. So, I decided to let him go after this project. And halfway through the assignment, it seemed apparent that removing him from the team would make sense.
My coworker, however, insisted I give him another chance and spent the next two days speaking with the newbie. Now he is a superstar, with an approachable attitude and improved work ethic.
Whether or not this behaviour stays, I learned that despite how unappealing the cover of the book and the first few pages, it does not merit being thrown in the garbage.
Give people the same chances and care you deserve in their situation.
