I am an attending Neurologist at a government hospital and have a patient suffering from paralysis in my ICU for the last 45 days. His son, who was the caregiver, was very upset that he was unable to care for his children at home and look after his father at the hospital at the same time. I listened patiently to his dilemma for about 25 minutes. He said that fifty per cent of the challenges a caregiver faces can be resolved if the attending doctor is polite and attentive. He felt better after talking to me and thanked me. I felt good too.
Listening without judging helps.
