One day, I saw a work colleague hiding and crying in the back of the warehouse. I approached her and consoled her. She shared that she had to drop out of her last semester due to not paying the fee. This was her last semester to earn her 4-yr degree.
I asked her how much she owed; upon learning the amount, I offered to pay her fees without thinking twice about it. I asked her for the details, went to the university website and paid off the balance. She said she’d pay me back, but I told her not to worry about it knowing that she struggled financially.
She invited me to her graduation; I was the only one outside of her parents and siblings. I did not think anything of this episode and continued with life. I hadn’t told a soul about it; I don’t think she did either.
A couple of months later, around Christmas time, I received a profit-sharing bonus from the company I work for; the value was almost 100x the fees I’d paid! I couldn’t believe the amount; I double and triple checked the zeros at the end, haha!
It wasn’t the first time I’d done something like that and definitely not the last; it’s not that I expect anything in return either or keep track, but this specific story has stuck – I have been blessed and grateful for the grace of the Divine.
Giving with a pure heart, without any expectation, is true giving.
