In March 2021, during the second Covid-19 wave, I got talking to my security guard. He asked me if taking the vaccine was necessary. He had heard a lot of disturbing and negative stories about the side effects of the vaccine. As I explained to him the urgency and absolute necessity of getting vaccinated, other security personnel also gathered around. They all had a lot of questions and apprehensions. A few of them weren’t convinced that getting vaccinated was a valid option.
I contacted a young doctor, Dr Priyanka Pathak, who stays in the same housing complex, to give them a talk. I wanted to help them understand that getting vaccinated would benefit them as they were first in the line of exposure to delivery men and other personnel who entered the building. The relevant information from a doctor who was doing active duty in a Covid ward would surely have more impact than hearing it from me.
Priyanka was very enthusiastic about the idea. She spoke to the security guards about the importance of wearing masks, when and how to dispose of them, using a sanitiser effectively, good nutrition, and various other medical protocols in case they suspected infection. In addition to the talk, we also distributed multi vitamin and Vitamin C tablets to everyone for a period of three months.
Eventually, all the guards got vaccinated, and not a single one fell prey to the Covid-19 virus throughout the second wave.
