A couple of days ago I went into the supermarket to pick up a couple of things. While inside, I noticed a cleaner who was doing his job. As you know, they are hired through agencies and have low salaries that may not be paid directly from their workplace.
I felt despondent when I saw the sad look in his eyes. Anyway, I paid my bill and left, and then I suddenly felt, ‘What good did I do by feeling sad?’ So I returned to the supermarket, lingered just outside the entrance, caught his eye, signalled him to come out, and gave him a small tip. He was totally surprised. I was happy that I went back and tipped him not for anything that he did for me but for the sheer joy of giving.
When we give we derive immense joy.
