“The most sublime act is to set another before you.” Spoken by English poet William Blake, this quote reveals what I believe is a very important, if not the most important, thing a person can do. Putting others first involves laying aside our interests and then willingly doing something for another person’s benefit.
One month ago, I did visit one of Kolkata’s largest slum areas to interact with the people and donate food and daily necessities. I always thought it was better to receive than to give, but when I donated food and other daily items to the underprivileged women in our society, I realized that it’s better to give than to receive.
For these women, who barely have the basics covered, sharing a day of food and daily necessities was such a humbling experience for me.
I’ll never forget the feeling of donating to someone who needed it more than I did.
The biggest lesson in my life that I gathered from this event is “Focusing on the needs of others first does not have to involve grandiose sacrifices”. You just need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.
No law of life is more important than the gift of giving.
