Yesterday while we were sitting on the cemented bench outside our house, a lady came asking for alms. While she was not a regular, and as the policy in our house is never to turn anyone away, I gave her some money. Immediately she asked me to give her something for her headache. I refused, thinking she was taking advantage. But as she went along to the next few houses, I was disturbed that I had denied a small thing like a headache balm. My daughter, who was watching the whole episode, told me, “Amma, maybe she really has a headache after walking in the sun at noon.” So I waited for her return and offered her some balm, which she took very willingly and applied some on her head immediately.
