Around this time of the year, when it is freezing cold outside, we hold this annual activity, “Santa on Wheels”, every year on the 24th evening. We start at around 8.00 pm and usually finish by 10.00 pm. It’s a collective Rak of the kind students, parents, and teachers. We very gently and sensitively ask for donations of clean, warm thick blankets and delicious biscuits. So everybody pitches in with goodies or blankets. The countdown begins, and teachers and I share kindness stories with the students.
As kindness begins from home, we distributed 33 blankets to nannies and conductors first during the day. This 24th, we finally gathered as many as 135 good quality blankets and sacks full of goodies. We loaded up the rest of the blankets and goodies in the school bus, and around 20 teachers volunteered to come along for the evening kindness task. We had dressed four conductors as Santas. We went around Patiala City: under the bridge, railway station, near bus stand and near Dukhniwaran Gurdwara distributing the blankets and goodies. They were surprised and happy to see us all. We chatted with some and heard their stories with mixed feelings of sadness and happiness. We were able to help, albeit it was a minuscule gesture.
I am very, very grateful to the many kind souls who made Santa On Wheels possible. I then wrote an open letter to the students, parents and staff for their kind efforts. Aren’t I lucky to witness that such kind souls exist? May Divine Mother and Guruji protect them too 🙏
Create opportunities for kindness, learn kindness and teach kindness.
