Ever since I moved back to Delhi, the doorbell rang incessantly. It rang this morning, too, and my house help informed me of someone asking for water to sit/ flatten mud into a freshly dug pit.
Well, the pit wasn’t in front of my bungalow! I walked out with the intent of giving the person a piece of my mind.
But I was greeted politely by an officer from JIO who informed me that the dug-up was for conducting repairs. Our neighbours had flatly refused to give water, so without any hesitation, I drew the garden hose to their site and helped them patch it all up.
Post that, much to the surprise of the two labourers, I offered more ester in a bucket to wash up and then handed them a very small amount of money each.
Receiving water and cash and me standing by them for more than half an hour were met with immense appreciation. The neighbours stood on their balconies and just stared.
Here’s a company trying to give the service which everyone demands. Is it not our responsibility to stretch ourselves a bit and help them do their job well?
Don’t just stand and watch. Help better our own environment.
