My Jijaji (brother-in-law) taught me to make proper use of kitchen waste:
1. Bio Enzyme – when fruit peels/flowers (lots wasted after any function, daily in temples) are mixed with jaggery and water in a particular proportion, it gives us much valuable bio enzyme (BE) after 2-3 months. I now use citrus peel BE in place of phenyl to mop the floor. I use it to wash utensils ( I add a little cleaning gel to the bio enzyme ), and also, I use reetha ( soapnut) BE to wash clothes ( yes, in a washing machine).
Using BE reduces the chemical load on earth, prevents pollution and help the earth and water heal. BE are known to reduce harmful elements from polluted water.
2. Compost – all vegetable peels/eggshells/spoilt grains from the kitchen are put into a drum with holes for aeration. We add dried leaves, occasionally some mustard seeds, neem leaves, and cow dung manure. In a few months, all this kitchen waste decomposes into black coloured compost, which plants love a lot.
The methods to make BE and compost are available on the internet. I am sharing these here, on the BL platform, because we all are determined to make this planet a better place!
Lets be kind to the Earth.
