Although I love animals, I could never connect with birds. In fact, I dont know much about them at all. I have had dogs and loved them dearly. My dogs have been my companion, my therapy, happy hormones and stress busters.
Two years ago, one morning I saw a crow sitting on my window, and I had this urge to feed it something. So, I gave it some cooked rice. From that day onwards, I have been feeding the crows every single day. A few months ago, I realised that not just crows but even sparrows and squirrels come to my window to grab a bite. I was delighted. Just looking at them fly down, sit on the window, hop about a bit then grab the food and fly away is so fulfilling.
These birds which were an alien race to me a few years ago have become family today. The day I forget to feed them, they sit on the window and caw, they demand their share of food. Two months ago, when I lost my dog, I saw compassion in their eyes. It was as if they were telling me, “we know how you feel and we care”. They speak to me in a language of their own, a language of love.
I know nothing about birds even today, I have grown to read their expressions. I can sense their needs in some way. They are cute, funny, smart, clever and also cause a ruckus. The bond I have established with them is beautiful, it’s real. I feel, no matter which part of the world I am in, these feathered friends will always reach out to me and be there for me. It’s a bond I am truly grateful for.
