Yesterday got a call from my cousin with whom I am not on talking terms. Because we generally end up arguing. I was going to ignore the call when I remembered a Rak – call family members. I decided I will fulfil the basic courtesy and finish the phone call. I had just finished the basic ‘hello, how are you’, when she just broke down and told me she had just lost her best friend to COVID. She needed to vent and cry. She had tried to talk to some cousins, but no one had been receptive as they were going through their own problems. For half an hour, she cried, talking about all the good times she had had with her friend and how no one could take her place. I basically just listened to her- offering words of solace in between. After she had calmed down, she thanked me for listening to her. She just needed someone who could listen and share her grief. We finished the phone call with a promise to keep in touch.
Throughout the day, I had a happy feeling that I helped reduce her grief just by listening.
Sometimes just being there is enough.
