My friend, who’s my roommate, had a nasty habit of smoking. He used to smoke 8-10 cigarettes a day. And because of this, he developed health issues, and his cough was not improving. He told me that he tried quitting but failed. So I decided to help him.
As we were new to the city, we had very few friends, and he could not ask others for cigarettes. So he needed to ask me even if he had to buy cigarettes. I told him to transfer all his money to my account and give me all the cash. I also made him join the ten-day Vipassana course, which he could not complete.
I knew quitting the habit of years in a day would be difficult. So I told him we would gradually reduce the number of cigarettes. Now he smokes 3-4 daily, which I hope will decrease too. The best thing about the whole process was that he was motivated and really wanted to quit smoking. But I’m happy that he is trying and that I made a positive difference to my friend’s life.
