A few years ago, luck wasn’t on my side! I needed a work visa for Italy, and despite living in Bangalore, my visa appointment was scheduled in Hyderabad. I travelled there with about Rs.2000 on me. I needed Rs.5000 to pay my visa fees and decided to withdraw the rest on my appointment day.
On the day of my appointment, I hailed an auto-rickshaw and told him to stop at an ATM. The machine didn’t have the cash to dispense, so we drove to another ATM. Again, the device said, ‘Can’t dispense funds.’ Baba, my auto driver, drove me to at least 15 ATMs but had no luck. Baba sensed my distress. I told him my story and added, ‘I’m going to miss my appointment!’ I was distraught. Baba tried to help me by taking me to a few stores with ATM machines, and I pleaded with them, ‘Please allow me to swipe my card.” But no one helped.
Time was ticking– I was going to miss my appointment. Just then, Baba took out Rs. 3000 from his wallet and offered it to me. He said, ‘These are my savings for my kid’s school fees – use it to pay for your visa!’ Despite being absolutely desperate, I told him I couldn’t accept his gesture. But Baba consoled me, ‘At this time, you require the money more.’ His kindness was overwhelming; he didn’t expect anything in return! We hurried to the office, and guess what? I returned with my visa! Baba was waiting for me, and I excitedly told him, ‘You saved my day!’ And right after that, the very next ATM I visited dispensed cash for me!
Both Baba and I laughed – I was happy I could repay him! Baba and I agreed that destiny had a part to play in meeting each other. And so, he took me around Hyderabad and became my tour guide, but more importantly, my friend!
