For the past six years, I have been visiting a slum and encouraging the dwellers to educate their children, especially the girl child. This slum has never seen a child study beyond class 7th.
School Education and the provision of basics such as stationery, school bags etc., enabled a girl child from the slum to join a hospitality and hotel management college full time after her 12th-grade board exams.
Many girl children are in senior classes from the same slum and are deprived of even basic facilities such as a toilet. I’m sure the day is not far away when I will see these children well educated, having decent jobs and working hard to rent a room which will include a washroom.
Not only will their entire family benefit, but she will also be an example to many in her position. All it takes is a little support, energy and affection.
Takeaway
Education is everyone’s birthright.
