It all started a few days before Diwali when our children suggested we spend the money on the poor rather than buying gifts for friends. During my lookout, I chanced upon this slum of 35 Jhuggis (huts) and have been with them ever since. For the past six years, they have been regularly provided with rations, woollens, education, counselling and encouragement.
Today, the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) results were declared. The children in the picture have fared brilliantly in class 10th and 12th, scoring distinction and setting an example for others to follow. This is where no girl child has studied beyond class 7th as the parents employ them to earn money to sustain their big families.
These children brave the regular fights in their homes and neighbourhood, do housework like cooking and cleaning etc. and much more before they go to school and tutorials. They live in settlements where their houses don’t have pucca (permanent) walls.
They even exercise during some time of the day to be physically fit for their future.
All that I can say – Gratitude. 🤗
