Recently I had to talk about a former mentee of me who had slowly disappeared from work after a prolonged illness. In conversations about him, the question naturally came up:“If he has energy for outings and relationships, why not for work?”And honestly, I understand the confusion. We often expect pain to look complete. Consistent. Easy to recognize. But human beings are rarely that symmetrical.Sometimes the places where we struggle most are not the places that demand the most effort, but the places carrying the most fear, shame, overwhelm, or inner noise.I understand that compassion is not about removing accountability or pretending impact does not exist. It is simply the willingness to admit:“We may not be seeing the whole story.”There are invisible mountains people climb before replying to a message, entering an office, attending a meeting, or facing a version of themselves they no longer know how to carry. And perhaps gentleness begins there. Not in certainty. But in remembering how much of another person’s inner world remains unseen.
Takeaway
We don’t know the whole story, let us be gentle in judging
