We got a new watchman in my building around three months ago. I found him to be a sincere worker and enthusiastic about maintaining the compound clean. He would even sweep in his spare time!
One rainy day I was returning home and had the misfortune of being soaked in dirty gutter water (splashed from both sides as I sat in an open rick), and I just wanted to rush home and take a bath when he saw me and pointed to the floor. Honestly, I was in no mood to engage in any conversation 🤨🤨 and just could not understand what he wanted to convey.🤔 I could sense irritation creeping into me, and I wanted to say something like, “Can’t you see that I have a bag and an umbrella in my hand, and I am completely drenched.” But thankfully, I didn’t say anything. He then told me he had cleaned the green moss from the stretch of the compound leading to the stairs so that people could walk safely. I gestured OK and rushed home.
On reflection, my controlled responses have been possible thanks to the small practices in the app – the meditation or the reinforce articles have impacted my behaviour. I am so grateful that I didn’t react in any manner that I would regret later. Last fortnight I learnt that the watchman had passed away one night after doing his duty. I spoke to a couple of members and have decided to contribute some money to his family.
In terms of my responses, a lot of work remains to be done, but this one incident made me realize how carefully I need to respond.
Don’t mix unkind words with a bad mood.🙏
